Who Knew?
Who knew a brother and sister could have such different experiences at the pediatrician. Grace and Colin had their 4-yr. and 2-yr. check ups today (yes, we are a little behind). Anyway the whole visit consisted of 5 shots, 1 blood pressure read (our first experience with the cuff and had to do it 3 times), 2 flu-mist nasal sprays, 2 finger prick blood draws, 2 vision tests, 1 hearing test, and 1 urine collection not to mention and all the usual poking measuring, weighing, etc. The good news - kids are healthy, nothing wrong but I had to ask two questions - #1 Are you sure Grace can hear? because I swear she doesn't hear me half the time and #2 Are you sure Colin's behavior is normal for a two-year old? because I have never seen anything like it. They assured me all was okay (I may seek a second opinion). Unlike at home, Colin cooperated beautifully. He answered the doctor displaying his range of vocabulary, opened his mouth to say AAHHH, sat perfectly still while they used the machine to check his eyes, and didn't even flinch when he got his shots and finger stuck. Grace, who is more cooperative at home, thought the world was coming to an end today. She was already crying in the waiting room in anticipation of the shots. First she ranted and raved about the idea of getting her blood pressure taken. It was something unfamiliar and had to coax her through it explaining the machine was going to hug her arm - she still responded with "Ow, Ow, Ow" through the process. She complained to the nurse that the headphones for the hearing test were hurting her. Mind you, her giant bottom lip was protruding through the whole experience. She writhed like a wild animal when getting her shots (took 3 of us to complete the process), and carried on for ten minutes while we waited to get her blood drawn from her finger-tip. Meanwhile Colin was putting his Spiderman sticker as well as his band-aids on the walls of the office and using his Nemo sticker to decorate his forearm like a tattoo. He also escaped the room every chance he got, running the halls in his diaper checking out the other exam rooms. Finally it was all over - every nurse that saw (and heard) Grace ran to get her another sticker. By the end she had Polly Pocket, 2 Princesses, My Little Pony, and Wonder Pets plastered to the front of her dress. Tonight she was still complaining that she couldn't walk because her leg hurt where she got the shot. Amazingly she got outside and ran around to play soccer, but then came in to report to Dad that she couldn't walk anymore. If this is the drama you get at 4, what happens at 14?
